Our Farm

A Cut Flower Farm in West Chester, PA

Welcome to Walnut Hill Flower Farm! My grandparents, Frank and Hazel Troilo, purchased this home and and three acres of land on Walnut Hill Road back in 1962. We started our small family farm in hopes of preserving the land. (You can read more about it in “Our Story”.) We have no heavy farm machinery, big hoop houses, or fancy green houses. Our farm is lovingly tended by hand much the way my grandparents cared for their flowers for so many years; on their hands and knees, with a shovel, boots, and some gloves. We hope you sense the love that we put into our flowers, and that you will be blessed by the beauty they bring.

What we do…

Things begin to get exciting on the farm in January, when we start the first seeds for our spring harvest and plan our crop layout. We plant most of our seeds into soil blocks, and grow them on heat mats and under lights in our basement grow room. We currently grow about 20,000 seedlings a season. Each seedling is planted by hand in our beds, and tended for harvest. From May-October we harvest buckets of flowers by hand to be used for our bouquets and arrangements. You can purchase our flowers a la carte through our site, through bouquet subscriptions on our site, or by visiting us at the Kennett Square Farmers Market from June-October

Stewards of the Land

We firmly believe in doing our best to enhance a healthy, thriving, ecosystem on our farm. We work to build a living soil, encourage beneficial bugs and pollinators, and regulate pests with natural measures such as attracting birds and snakes to our property, and allowing our chickens to feast on harmful insects. We are constantly learning about ways to allow nature to thrive in our space, and we work hard to implement sustainable practices that support the land and its inhabitants of all sizes.
