Meet our Class Instructors

Kristin Wisnewski

Kristin is in her sixth year as owner and farmer-florist at Walnut Hill Flower Farm, in West Chester, PA, where she grows thousands of plants from seed for her CSA program, weddings, and events. As a former teacher of over 20 years, she has carried her love of teaching into her new farming endeavor.

Kate Proto

Kate is a storytelling photographer, artist, and avid gardener. She has created a magical garden space at her home in West Chester, PA, which is the perfect backdrop for her photography and ideal setting for her meaningful women’s retreats and intimate elopements. What you will learn at the workshop

❋ How to read a seed packet

Know how to read the back of a seed packet, from soil depth and date to days to maturity. etc. so you can be a successful gardener!

❋ What to plant and when

Learn about USDA plant hardiness zones and the significance of knowing your first and last frost dates. Discover which plants to plant in very early spring, and which plants to plant after Mother’s Day, and WHY.

❋ What tools you need for seed starting

Receive instruction and helpful handouts about the tools and supplies needed for successful seed starting, and how to use them. Also receive your own heat mat and seedling trays to keep.

❋ What garden structure is best for your needs

Explore the different options for building your new garden. What structure is best for you? Raised beds vs. a garden patch or containers. Enjoy a walk through the garden to see the options. (Weather permitting.)

❋ The process of sowing and growing seeds

Seed starting can be easy with the right technique, tools, and routine for caring for your plants! You will learn how to sow seeds in soil blocks (great space savers!) and in trays.

What you will receive:

  • A heat mat for seed starting

  • Seedling trays

  • Burlap for covering seeds

  • Seed packets (choice of veggies and flowers)

  • Ongoing communication as questions arise

The Venue

The workshop will be held at Kate’s beautiful home and garden in West Chester, PA. We will spend time indoors and briefly outdoors, so please dress appropriately.
